some say that it is only debatable-ness that makes painting painting. that painting is only painting by establishing itself as painting against "common-sense" evidence to the contrary. but that made so much more sense when the debatable paintings were Courbet, Cezanne, Stella. Now we have Katherina Grosse and Jessica Stockholder whose work can be claimed as painting, and no one wants to debate anyway. I really like both of them, but far-outness is no longer contentious or interesting in itself. It's all about more minute distinctions now. So maybe this isn't a painting, but I think it is.
